Bacopa Monnieri (Brahmi) in MemoPryl: What the Evidence Shows
Bacopa monnieri, also sold as brahmi, is one of six names tied to MemoPryl on a sibling pack. It is unconfirmed for your bottle and no amount is printed. Trials suggest it may speed attention after 12 weeks or more, yet the evidence is limited. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you begin, and stay on prescribed medicine.

The basics01
What is Bacopa monnieri (brahmi) in MemoPryl?
Bacopa monnieri is an Ayurvedic marsh herb, and brahmi is the name it is sold under. It is one of six ingredient names tied to MemoPryl through a sibling pack in the same listing family. Nothing confirms it for the bottle that arrives.
No Supplement Facts panel is printed on any image we have, so the amount is not printed. The two bottle images also disagree on capsule count (30 or 60). Trust the bottle that arrives over any page.
One name trap to know. NIH's liver database notes that brahmi is also a name used for gotu kola, so the two can be confused (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). Check the Latin name on your bottle.
| Name as the seller lists it | Brahmi / Bacopa monnieri |
|---|---|
| What it is | An Ayurvedic marsh herb, sold as brahmi |
| On the bottle? | Unconfirmed: listed in the seller's notes for a sibling pack; we were given no Supplement Facts panel |
| Amount per capsule | Not printed (no Supplement Facts panel supplied) |
| Amount used in research | Trials used 300 to 600 mg of extract a day for at least 12 weeks |
| Strength of evidence | Nine trials pooled in a meta-analysis suggest it may speed attention; the NIH liver database says adequate trials have not shown it works for any disease |
| Marketed use | Sold for memory |
| Main caution | Usually mild: nausea, stomach cramps, loose stools. |
Evidence02
Does bacopa help memory?
It may help a little with attention speed, but the proof is thin. A pooled review of nine trials found bacopa may improve cognition, especially attention speed, after at least 12 weeks (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.).
Those trials used a standardized bacopa extract, not a mixed capsule. Nine studies with 518 people met the review's rules, and 437 went into the final pooling. The authors said a larger head-to-head trial is still needed (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.).
StatPearls adds a mixed picture. One group of six studies at 300 to 450 mg of extract improved free recall but not other thinking skills. Another trial gave 450 mg a day for 12 weeks to 30 healthy adults and found no meaningful change in scores (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri).
NIH's liver database is firmer in tone. It says bacopa is not approved in the United States as therapy for any condition and has not been shown effective for any disease in well-controlled human trials (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).
Possible small gain in attention speed after months of use, in studies of a pure extract. No trial has tested MemoPryl, and nothing here shows it protects against memory loss.
Amounts03
How much bacopa was used in studies?
Trials used about 300 to 600 mg of bacopa extract a day, taken for at least 12 weeks (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). That is a research range, not a dose for you.
The MemoPryl amount is not printed on any image we have. So we cannot say whether a capsule is near the studied range, far below it or far above it. Take the bottle as directed and never add capsules to reach a study number.
The dashed bar marks the MemoPryl amount: not printed.
Safety04
What are the side effects of bacopa?
Side effects are usually mild: nausea, abdominal pain or cramps, loose stools and headache (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri) (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri). StatPearls also calls it mildly sedating (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri).
The liver database rates bacopa as an unlikely cause of clinically apparent liver injury (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). That is reassuring, not a promise, so report yellow skin or dark urine to a doctor.
Reassuring points
- Reported effects are mostly stomach related.
- The liver database rates liver injury as unlikely.
Open questions
- Long-term safety data are limited.
- The amount in MemoPryl is not printed.
- It is paired with five other names, two with serious medicine cautions.

Does bacopa interact with medicines?
It can, so ask a pharmacist before you start. StatPearls lists cautions with cholinergic and anticholinergic drugs and with thyroid medicine (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri).
It also names conditions that call for care: a slow heartbeat, peptic ulcer disease and asthma (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri). If any of these fit you, bring the bottle to your next visit.
| Ask first if you have or take | Why |
|---|---|
| Cholinergic or anticholinergic drugs | Effects may add up or work against each other |
| Thyroid disease or thyroid medicine | Thyroid effects are a listed concern |
| Slow heartbeat (bradycardia) | Listed as a condition needing care |
| Peptic ulcer or asthma | Listed as conditions needing care |
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you begin. The same capsule may carry St. John's wort, which weakens many medicines, and ginkgo, which may raise bleeding risk (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements).
Reading the bottle06
How do I check for bacopa on my MemoPryl bottle?
Look for "Bacopa monnieri" or "brahmi" on the Supplement Facts panel, with an amount in milligrams. If the panel is missing or the name is absent, treat the seller's notes' list as wrong for your bottle.
- Find the Latin name, not only "brahmi".
- Look for an amount and whether it says extract.
- Check the capsule count: label A says 30, label B says 60.
- Keep the box and lot number if you report a problem.
The FDA says it cannot approve supplements before sale and advises asking a doctor or pharmacist before use (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements). A label claim carries the statement that FDA has not evaluated it (FDA, Structure/Function Claims).

What should I read after bacopa?
Read the profile of St. John's wort next, because it carries the largest medicine warning of the six.

FAQ08
Bacopa and brahmi questions
Is bacopa in MemoPryl?
Bacopa (brahmi) is named on a sibling MemoPryl pack, and that is unconfirmed for your bottle. No Supplement Facts panel was supplied, so no amount is known. Check the panel on the bottle that arrives.
What are the side effects of bacopa?
Reported effects are mostly mild: nausea, stomach cramps, loose stools and headache. It can also cause mild sleepiness. Stop and call your doctor if you notice yellow skin, dark urine or any reaction that worries you.
How long does bacopa take to work?
Studies that found any effect ran at least 12 weeks, so a few days tell you little. Even then the finding was small, mainly faster attention. No trial has tested MemoPryl, so no timeline can be promised.
Is brahmi the same as bacopa?
Often, yes, but not always. Brahmi is a common name for Bacopa monnieri, and NIH notes it is also used for gotu kola. Look for the Latin name on the label.
Can bacopa be taken with thyroid medicine?
Ask first. StatPearls lists thyroid conditions and thyroid medicine among its cautions. Keep taking your prescription and have a pharmacist read the bottle before you add bacopa.
Is bacopa better than ginkgo for memory?
Neither has strong proof. Bacopa trials hint at faster attention, while the large GEM trial found no drop in dementia rates with ginkgo. Ginkgo also carries a bleeding caution, so compare the risks as well.
