Supplements While Nursing: What to Ask First

Quick answer

Supplements while nursing should be cleared with your doctor or pharmacist before the first capsule. St. John's wort, one of six names tied to a MemoPryl sibling pack, is advised against in pregnancy and nursing. Others need a provider's okay. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask first.

Start here01

Which supplements while nursing need a doctor's okay first?

Nearly all of them do. A capsule that is fine for one adult can be a different matter when you are pregnant or feeding a baby.

FDA is not authorized to approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements). So a bottle on a shelf has not been cleared for you, or for a nursing parent in particular.

NCCIH also notes that "natural" does not always mean "safe" (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).

Write down every supplement, then show the bottle to your pharmacist and your doctor before you start.

Keep taking prescribed medicine.

Do not stop or change a prescription because of a supplement or an article. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you begin anything new.

The big one02

Is St. John's wort safe when pregnant or nursing?

No. Memorial Sloan Kettering says pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take St. John's wort (MSK, St. John's Wort).

NCCIH says it may be unsafe in pregnancy because it may raise the risk of birth defects (NCCIH, St. John's Wort safety). It can also weaken many medicines, including birth control pills (NCCIH, St. John's Wort safety).

St. John's wort is one of six ingredient names tied to a MemoPryl sibling pack. That list is unconfirmed for the bottle you receive, and no amounts are printed on any image we have. If you are pregnant or nursing, read the bottle's ingredient panel first. If you see it, put the bottle down and call your provider.

The two bottle images disagree on capsule count, and neither shows a panel. The bottle that arrives wins.

The other five03

What about ginkgo, phosphatidylserine and the rest?

Ask a provider about each one. Our sources give a clear warning for only some of them, and silence is not a green light.

Cleveland Clinic says people who are pregnant or breastfeeding should ask a provider before phosphatidylserine (Cleveland Clinic, Phosphatidyl.). For ginkgo, NCCIH notes a possible bleeding risk (NCCIH, Ginkgo), which matters around delivery and any procedure.

For the other three, our sources do not address nursing. That is a gap, not proof of safety.

Before you buy04

How do I check a memory supplement when I am pregnant or nursing?

Run the five questions below, then take the bottle to a pharmacist. If any answer is yes, a professional should look at the label before you do anything.

FDA says to talk to a health care provider about caffeine if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding (FDA, Caffeine). Read the whole panel.

  • Is St. John's wort on the ingredient panel?
  • Do you take any prescription medicine?
  • Is there caffeine or a long list of herbs?
  • Is there a surgery or delivery date coming up?

The full cautions are on the side effects page.

Memory after a baby05

Is forgetfulness common after having a baby?

Forgetfulness can be a normal part of life, and short sleep makes it worse. A capsule is not the first fix.

The National Institute on Aging says sleep helps you store memories and lists memory problems among the effects of poor sleep (NIA, Sleep and Older Adults). Rest when you can and ask for help with night feeds.

If a memory change keeps getting worse, see a doctor. The medicine guide lists what to bring.

FAQ06

Supplements while nursing: quick questions

Do I need to tell my baby's doctor about my supplements?

Yes, mention them. Tell your own doctor and pharmacist as well. Bring the bottles or photos of the labels so they can read every ingredient. They can tell you what to avoid while nursing or pregnant.

Is a natural herb safer than a medicine while breastfeeding?

Not automatically. According to NCCIH, natural does not always mean safe. St. John's wort is a plant, yet Memorial Sloan Kettering says breastfeeding women should not take it. Ask a provider before any herb.

Does FDA check supplements before they are sold?

No. FDA says it has no authority to approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they reach the market. That is why a pharmacist check matters more for nursing parents.
