Supplements and Blood Thinners: What to Ask a Pharmacist
Supplements and blood thinners can interact. FDA says ginkgo, warfarin, aspirin and vitamin E can each thin the blood, and taking them together may raise the risk of internal bleeding or stroke. St. John's wort can also affect warfarin. Ask a pharmacist before you start, and keep taking your prescription.

Can you take supplements with blood thinners?
Only after a pharmacist or doctor checks. Some supplements add to blood thinning and others change how a blood thinner works.
FDA says ginkgo biloba, warfarin, aspirin and vitamin E can each thin the blood, and taking them together may increase the risk of internal bleeding or stroke (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements). NCCIH says ginkgo may raise bleeding risk in people taking anticoagulants such as warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo).
St. John's wort goes the other way. NCCIH lists warfarin among the medicines it can weaken (NCCIH, St. John's Wort safety).
| Supplement | Concern |
|---|---|
| Ginkgo | Adds to blood thinning; bleeding case reports (MSK, Ginkgo) |
| Vitamin E | Can thin the blood (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements) |
| St. John's wort | Can weaken warfarin (NCCIH, St. John's Wort safety) |
What should I ask a pharmacist?
Ask about each ingredient by name, ask what to watch for, and ask what to do if something changes.
Is each ingredient safe with my medicine?
Name the blood thinner and bring the bottle.
What signs should I watch for?
Ask about unusual bruising, bleeding gums or dark stools.
Who do I call if I notice them?
Get a number and know when to use emergency care.
Keep taking your blood thinner exactly as directed. Never skip or change a dose on your own to fit a supplement. If you have surgery coming, the team may ask you to stop supplements two to three weeks before (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements).

See packsWhen is bleeding an emergency?
Call emergency services for bleeding that will not stop, a sudden severe headache, or stroke-like symptoms. FDA lists bleeding and stroke-like symptoms among serious reactions to report (FDA, Report a Supplement Problem).
For milder signs such as new bruising, call your pharmacist or doctor the same day. This post is general information and does not replace their advice. More at the medicine guide.
FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
Does ginkgo thin the blood?

Does St. John's wort affect warfarin?
Yes. NCCIH lists warfarin among the medicines St. John's wort can weaken. A weaker blood thinner is a safety problem, so tell your clinician if you use or plan to use the herb.
