Why Is St. John's Wort in a Memory Supplement?
St. John's wort in a memory supplement is hard to explain, because the herb is studied mainly for low mood, not memory. The seller's product notes names it on a sibling MemoPryl pack without saying why. NCCIH does not describe it as a memory aid, and it can weaken many medicines.

Why would a memory supplement include St. John's wort?
The seller's product notes does not say. It lists the herb among six names on a sibling MemoPryl pack and gives no reason.
One common idea in supplement marketing is that mood and focus go together. That is a sales idea, not a finding we can cite. The herb is studied as a remedy for depression, not as a memory ingredient.
The name is also unconfirmed for the bottle you receive, and no amount is printed on any image we have.
Does St. John's wort help memory?
We found no memory trial for it in our sources. NCCIH's in-depth page is about depression, and it says the herb is not consistently effective even there (NCCIH, St. John's Wort in depth).
A memory claim needs its own evidence. The table shows where this herb stands.
| Question | Answer from our sources |
|---|---|
| Studied for low mood? | Yes, with mixed results (NCCIH, St. John's Wort in depth) |
| Memory trial cited? | None in our sources |
| Works with all medicines? | No, it can weaken many (NCCIH, St. John's Wort safety) |
| Amount in MemoPryl? | Not printed |
How do the label claims compare with the evidence?
The bottle claims are focus, memory, clarity, concentration, brain energy and productivity, each with an asterisk. None of them mentions mood.
FDA does not approve these statements before sale. It requires a disclaimer saying the claim has not been evaluated (FDA, Structure/Function Claims). Weigh each claim below against what studies show.
- Label A“Optimized Memory*”MemoPryl itself has not been tested in a trial. Ginkgo did not lower dementia rates against placebo in the 3,069-person GEM trial, and NCCIH calls the evidence for most supplements inconclusive. (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA) (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition)
- Label A“Improves Mental Clarity*”'Improves' is a strong verb to use in a structure/function claim. A meta-analysis of bacopa trials lasting 12 weeks or more found faster attention at 300 mg or more of extract, an amount none of the bottle images prints. (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.) (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri)
- Label A“Supports Focus*”St. John's wort was studied for mood rather than focus, and glutamine has no memory trial. None of the bottle images prints an amount for any ingredient. (NCCIH, St. John's Wort in depth) (MSK, Glutamine)
- Label B“Supports Concentration*”The evidence is for single ingredients, at doses this site cannot see. A health claim generally needs randomized human tests of the product itself. (FTC, Health Products Guidance)
- Label B“Supports Brain Energy*”'Brain energy' is not something medicine measures. In dementia, a Cochrane review found acetyl-L-carnitine had no effect on severity. (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Pennisi 2020, ALC in dementia)
- Label B“Supports Productivity*”Supplement trials do not measure productivity. In the FTC's view, personal stories are never enough to back a health claim. (FTC, Health Products Guidance)
- Both labelsThe FDA asteriskStructure/function wording is permitted when the FDA disclaimer goes with it. It is neither FDA approval nor a disease claim. (FDA, Structure/Function Claims)
- Badges“Doctor formulated”, “GMP certified”, “FDA registered”None of them names a doctor, certifier or audit. FDA registers facilities but approves neither them nor the supplement. (FDA, Hidden Ingredients) (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements)
- Bottle30 capsules and Cognitive Support, or 60 capsules and Advanced FormulaThe brand set's two bottle images do not agree. Only the bottle you receive settles it.
The claims exactly as the two bottle images print them. A health claim needs competent and reliable scientific evidence, usually human trials of the same product (FTC, Health Products Guidance).

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start, and keep taking your prescribed medicine exactly as directed.
Then ask the seller whether the herb is on your bottle and in what amount. The herb can weaken antidepressants, birth control pills and warfarin (NCCIH, St. John's Wort safety).

FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
Is St. John's wort a mood herb or a memory herb?
In our sources it is a mood herb. NCCIH discusses it as a remedy for depression and calls the evidence inconsistent. We found no memory trial for it. Any memory use is a marketing choice, not a finding.
Should I avoid a memory capsule if I take an antidepressant?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. If the product names St. John's wort, combining it with certain antidepressants may lead to serious serotonin-related side effects. Keep taking your prescription while you ask.
Can I check whether my bottle contains the herb?
Read the Supplement Facts panel on the bottle you receive. No image we have shows a panel, so we cannot say. If the panel is missing or unclear, call the order desk before the first capsule.
