Phosphatidylserine and Memory: What the Trials Found
Phosphatidylserine memory research is thin. The best-known trial gave 78 adults with memory complaints 100 mg or 300 mg a day for six months, and the overall memory test showed no gap from placebo. FDA says the science is very limited. No study has tested MemoPryl itself.

What is phosphatidylserine?
Phosphatidylserine is a fat-like substance called a phospholipid that sits in the membranes of brain cells.
Cleveland Clinic notes that it is not FDA approved to treat any medical condition (Cleveland Clinic, Phosphatidyl.).
It is one of six names tied to MemoPryl, taken from a sibling pack. The bottle you receive may differ, and no image we have prints an amount. Read the whole story on the phosphatidylserine ingredient page.
Does phosphatidylserine improve memory in trials?
Only slightly, and only for some people. The most cited trial is small and shows a mixed picture.
Researchers gave 78 adults aged 50 to 69 with memory complaints either 100 mg or 300 mg of soy phosphatidylserine a day, or placebo, for six months (Kato-Kataoka 2010, soy PS trial). Scores rose in every group, including placebo.
Gains over the starting point showed up mainly in people who began with lower memory scores, and mostly in delayed word recall. Across the whole group, the main memory test showed no difference from placebo (Kato-Kataoka 2010, soy PS trial).

How much phosphatidylserine did studies use?
The trial used 100 mg or 300 mg a day. A typical adult intake is cited as 100 to 200 mg a day (Cleveland Clinic, Phosphatidyl.).
The bars set those amounts beside what the bottle images print, which is nothing.

See packsWhat does FDA say about phosphatidylserine and memory?
FDA allowed two memory-related claims only with a warning attached.
Its 2003 letter let sellers say phosphatidylserine "may reduce the risk of dementia in the elderly" or of cognitive dysfunction, but each claim must begin "Very limited and preliminary scientific research suggests" and add that FDA concludes there is little scientific evidence for it (FDA letter, PS health claim).
That is a narrow door, not an endorsement. MemoPryl does not claim to prevent dementia, and neither do we. Sorting claims from evidence is the job of our guide to brain supplements.

What should I ask before trying it?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start, and keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed.
Cleveland Clinic lists upset stomach, gas, insomnia and headache as possible effects, and says phosphatidylserine may reduce the effect of anticholinergic drugs (Cleveland Clinic, Phosphatidyl.). Tell the pharmacist about every capsule you take.
If memory changes worry you or your family, book a visit instead of waiting on a supplement trial.

FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
Is phosphatidylserine from soy or cabbage better for memory?
The trial we cite used soy-derived phosphatidylserine, and no source here compares it with other origins. Check your bottle for its source if you have a soy allergy, and ask a pharmacist. Nothing we have shows one source is better for memory.
How long did the phosphatidylserine memory trial last?
The trial ran six months, with 78 adults aged 50 to 69 who had memory complaints. Scores rose in every group, including placebo, so a short test of a few weeks says little about what the studied amounts might do.
Does phosphatidylserine work for everyone with memory complaints?
No. In the trial, gains over baseline appeared mainly in people with lower starting scores, and the full-group memory test showed no difference from placebo. Results for one person cannot be predicted from a small trial.
