L-Glutamine Side Effects and Cautions
L-glutamine side effects reported in some studies include swelling, stomach symptoms, headache and fever, with case reports of liver and kidney injury. Memorial Sloan Kettering also says it may reduce the effect of lactulose. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use, especially with liver, kidney or gut problems.

What are the side effects of L-glutamine?
Memorial Sloan Kettering lists peripheral edema, stomach and gut symptoms, headache, fever and infections as adverse reactions seen in some studies (MSK, Glutamine).
Reactions varied by study, and our source gives no rate for any of them. That is why this post lists them as things to watch for, not as things certain to happen.
Those studies often used glutamine for specific health reasons, so the results do not map neatly onto a daily capsule. They still show what to watch for.
If you get a reaction, stop and call your doctor. FDA says to stop using a product you think caused a serious reaction and to report it (FDA, Report a Supplement Problem).
Can L-glutamine harm the liver or kidneys?
There are case reports of it. MSK notes case reports of liver injury and acute kidney injury (MSK, Glutamine).
These are rare reports, not a measured rate, and our sources give no number. Still, they are a reason for people with liver or kidney disease to ask a doctor first.
| Topic | What the source says |
|---|---|
| Swelling | Peripheral edema in some studies |
| Stomach and gut | Gastrointestinal symptoms |
| Head and body | Headache, fever, infections |
| Organs | Case reports of liver and acute kidney injury |
| Medicines | May reduce the ammonia-lowering effect of lactulose |
If you take lactulose, ask your prescriber before any glutamine product.

FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
Does L-glutamine cause bloating?
Our source lists stomach and gut symptoms and swelling as reactions in some studies, but it does not name bloating. If your stomach is upset after a dose, tell your pharmacist and follow your bottle.
What is lactulose and why does glutamine matter with it?
Lactulose is a medicine used to lower ammonia. MSK says glutamine may reduce that effect. Do not combine them without your prescriber knowing.
Is a natural amino acid free of side effects?
No. The body makes glutamine, yet MSK still lists adverse reactions and case reports of organ injury. Natural does not always mean safe, as NCCIH also warns.
Should I take glutamine with food?
Our sources give no timing advice, so we give none. Follow the directions printed on your bottle. If none are printed, ask the order desk or your pharmacist before the first capsule.
