Hidden Ingredients in Supplements: Real Risk or Rare?
Hidden ingredients in supplements are a real risk, but the best data points to other product types. From 2007 to 2016, FDA warnings identified 776 adulterated supplements, mostly sexual enhancement, weight loss and muscle building products. Memory products were not listed as a category.

How common are hidden ingredients in supplements?
They are a documented problem, concentrated in a few product types. One review of FDA warnings from 2007 to 2016 found 776 adulterated supplements (Tucker 2018, JAMA Netw Open).
Of those, 353 (45.5 percent) were sexual enhancement products, 317 (40.9 percent) were weight loss and 92 (11.9 percent) were muscle building. A total of 157 products (20.2 percent) held more than one unapproved ingredient (Tucker 2018, JAMA Netw Open).
| Product type | Products | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Sexual enhancement | 353 | 45.5 percent |
| Weight loss | 317 | 40.9 percent |
| Muscle building | 92 | 11.9 percent |
The source does not list memory or cognitive supplements as a category. It also does not prove any one product is clean.
What are the warning signs of a contaminated supplement?
FDA names claims that seem too good to be true, "herbal" or "all natural" labels, multiple rave reviews and claims of an "FDA-approved facility" (FDA, Hidden Ingredients).
FDA does not approve manufacturing facilities, so that last claim is a flag, not a comfort (FDA, Hidden Ingredients). Hidden ingredients are often prescription drug ingredients, banned substances or harmful chemicals, and can cause serious side effects and hospitalization.
- Label A“Optimized Memory*”MemoPryl itself has not been tested in a trial. Ginkgo did not lower dementia rates against placebo in the 3,069-person GEM trial, and NCCIH calls the evidence for most supplements inconclusive. (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA) (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition)
- Label A“Improves Mental Clarity*”'Improves' is a strong verb to use in a structure/function claim. A meta-analysis of bacopa trials lasting 12 weeks or more found faster attention at 300 mg or more of extract, an amount none of the bottle images prints. (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.) (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri)
- Label A“Supports Focus*”St. John's wort was studied for mood rather than focus, and glutamine has no memory trial. None of the bottle images prints an amount for any ingredient. (NCCIH, St. John's Wort in depth) (MSK, Glutamine)
- Label B“Supports Concentration*”The evidence is for single ingredients, at doses this site cannot see. A health claim generally needs randomized human tests of the product itself. (FTC, Health Products Guidance)
- Label B“Supports Brain Energy*”'Brain energy' is not something medicine measures. In dementia, a Cochrane review found acetyl-L-carnitine had no effect on severity. (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Pennisi 2020, ALC in dementia)
- Label B“Supports Productivity*”Supplement trials do not measure productivity. In the FTC's view, personal stories are never enough to back a health claim. (FTC, Health Products Guidance)
- Both labelsThe FDA asteriskStructure/function wording is permitted when the FDA disclaimer goes with it. It is neither FDA approval nor a disease claim. (FDA, Structure/Function Claims)
- Badges“Doctor formulated”, “GMP certified”, “FDA registered”None of them names a doctor, certifier or audit. FDA registers facilities but approves neither them nor the supplement. (FDA, Hidden Ingredients) (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements)
- Bottle30 capsules and Cognitive Support, or 60 capsules and Advanced FormulaThe brand set's two bottle images do not agree. Only the bottle you receive settles it.
The claims exactly as the two bottle images print them. A health claim needs competent and reliable scientific evidence, usually human trials of the same product (FTC, Health Products Guidance).
What can I check on MemoPryl?
Check what is verifiable: the label, the lot code and the seller's contact. MemoPryl is a dietary supplement in capsules, and no lab report is published for it.
A brand badge says "FDA registered facility", but no factory is named and all ten badges are seller claims, not certificates. The lot codes MP-26/ME-4662 and MP-4662-26-ME are seller references, not lab proof.

See the quality page and the lot check. NCCIH advises telling providers everything you take and stopping if you have side effects (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).

FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
How do I know if a supplement has hidden drugs in it?
You cannot tell by looking. FDA says warning signs include claims too good to be true and rave reviews. Ask a pharmacist, buy from sellers who publish lot details, and report unexpected effects to FDA.
Does an FDA registered facility mean the supplement is approved?
No. FDA does not approve manufacturing facilities or supplements before sale. A registered-facility badge is a seller claim, so read it as a description, not an endorsement.
Which supplement types had the most FDA warnings?
From 2007 to 2016, sexual enhancement products led with 45.5 percent, then weight loss at 40.9 percent and muscle building at 11.9 percent of warnings.
