Ginkgo Biloba and Memory: The Big Trial Results

Quick answer

Ginkgo biloba memory research has a clear headline: the large GEM trial of 3,069 adults aged 75 or older found no lower rate of dementia or Alzheimer's disease with ginkgo than with placebo. Whether it helps healthy people think better is uncertain. No study has tested MemoPryl itself.

Three bottles in label B style (Advanced Formula, 60 capsules). Ginkgo is named on a sibling pack, not confirmed for these bottles.

What did the big ginkgo trial find?

It found no benefit for lowering dementia rates. The GEM trial gave 3,069 volunteers aged 75 or older either 120 mg of ginkgo extract twice a day or placebo, and followed them for a median of 6.1 years (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA).

The authors concluded the dose was not effective in reducing the overall incidence of dementia or Alzheimer's disease (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA).

GEM trial, ginkgo against placebo
MeasureHazard ratioRange
Any dementia1.120.94 to 1.33
Alzheimer's disease1.160.97 to 1.39

A ratio above 1 means no lower risk with ginkgo. NCCIH agrees that ginkgo has not been shown to prevent dementia (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

Does ginkgo help memory in healthy adults?

That is uncertain. NCCIH says whether ginkgo improves thinking in healthy people is not clear (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

Memorial Sloan Kettering says large trials, including GEM, found ginkgo does not improve cognitive performance (MSK, Ginkgo).

An older Cochrane review saw an effect in some short studies, but when two studies were left out the result shrank to almost nothing (Cochrane 2009, ginkgo and dementia). The signal depended on a few trials.

How much ginkgo did studies use?

The GEM trial used 240 mg of leaf extract a day, taken as 120 mg twice daily (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA).

The MemoPryl bottle images print no amount, so a capsule cannot be compared with that dose.

The gold bars show daily amounts from human studies, and the light part marks the range. The dashed bar stays empty, since none of the bottle images prints an amount. No study has tested MemoPryl itself.

Is ginkgo in MemoPryl?

Ginkgo biloba leaf is one of six names tied to MemoPryl through a sibling pack. Nothing confirms it for the bottle you receive.

The bottles say "Optimized Memory*" or "Supports Concentration*", with the FDA asterisk. Those are label words, not study results. See the ginkgo ingredient page.

Ginkgo can raise bleeding risk, so ask a doctor or pharmacist first and keep taking prescribed medicine.

FAQ01

Questions people ask about MemoPryl

How long was the GEM ginkgo study?

The GEM study followed its 3,069 volunteers for a median of 6.1 years. That makes it one of the longest and largest ginkgo trials, which is why health agencies lean on it.

Why did the older Cochrane ginkgo review look more positive?

Its pooled result at 22 to 26 weeks looked better, but when two studies were removed the effect almost vanished. So the result leaned heavily on individual trials.

Is ginkgo leaf extract the same as ginkgo seeds?

No. NCCIH warns that fresh ginkgo seeds are toxic, while the studies cited here used leaf extract. Check your bottle to see which part of the plant is listed.
