Ginkgo and Blood Thinners: The Bleeding Risk Explained

Quick answer

Ginkgo and blood thinners should be combined only with a clinician's say-so. FDA says ginkgo biloba, warfarin, aspirin and vitamin E can each thin the blood, and taking them together may raise the risk of internal bleeding or stroke. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your pharmacist first.

Is it safe to take ginkgo with blood thinners?

Not without asking. FDA lists ginkgo biloba next to warfarin, aspirin and vitamin E as things that can each thin the blood (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements).

Taken together, the effects may add up and raise the chance of internal bleeding or stroke (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements). NCCIH also says ginkgo may increase bleeding risk in people on anticoagulants such as warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

Nobody should change a prescribed blood thinner because of a supplement. Keep taking it as directed and ask before adding ginkgo.

Do not change a prescribed medicine on your own.

Call your doctor or pharmacist first if you have a question about ginkgo and your blood thinner.

What bleeding problems have been reported with ginkgo?

Memorial Sloan Kettering lists case reports of spontaneous bleeding, including hematomas and bleeding in the brain (MSK, Ginkgo).

Case reports are not a rate. They do not tell us how often it happens. They do explain why pharmacists ask about ginkgo when they check a blood thinner.

MSK advises talking with a provider before using ginkgo if you take blood thinners, have a seizure history or use other interacting medicines (MSK, Ginkgo).

Should I ask my pharmacist before taking a ginkgo capsule?

Yes, if you take any blood thinner, daily aspirin or have a bleeding problem.

Bring the bottle, or a photo of it, and ask the pharmacist to check each name on it.

1. Are you on any prescription medicine, or under a doctor's care?
2. Are you pregnant, nursing or under 18?
3. Are you on an antidepressant, birth control pills, a blood thinner, or medicine for HIV, seizures, a transplant or the heart?
4. Is surgery or a dental procedure coming up, do you have a bleeding disorder, or do you take aspirin?
5. Do changes in memory or thinking worry you, in yourself or someone close?

FAQ01

Questions people ask about MemoPryl

Does ginkgo thin the blood like aspirin?

FDA says ginkgo biloba, aspirin, warfarin and vitamin E can each thin the blood, so effects may add up. Ginkgo is not a replacement for any medicine, and the combination needs a pharmacist's review.

Can I take ginkgo and aspirin together?

Ask first. FDA names both as items that can thin the blood and says taking them together may raise internal bleeding risk. Daily low-dose aspirin counts, so mention it.

What are warning signs of unusual bleeding?

Signs include bruising you cannot explain, nosebleeds that do not stop or blood in urine or stool. If you notice any after starting a supplement, stop it and call your doctor.
