Brain Supplement Side Effects to Watch For
Brain supplement side effects depend on the ingredient. Common ones are headache, nausea, stomach upset and dizziness, while some ingredients add sleepiness, insomnia, sun sensitivity or bleeding risk. Stop and call your doctor if you have a reaction, and keep taking prescribed medicine.

What are the common brain supplement side effects?
Headache, nausea and stomach upset show up across most of the ingredients sold for memory and focus. Others are specific to one herb.
The table lists what the sources print for five ingredients. Six names are tied to MemoPryl on a sibling pack, including these five plus L-glutamine. That list is unconfirmed for your bottle, and no amounts are printed on any image we have.
| Ingredient | Side effects listed |
|---|---|
| Ginkgo | Dizziness, stomach symptoms, headache (NCCIH, Ginkgo); bleeding case reports (MSK, Ginkgo) |
| St. John's wort | Headache, nausea, dry mouth, sleepiness, stomach upset, sun sensitivity (MSK, St. John's Wort) |
| Phosphatidylserine | Upset stomach, gas, insomnia, headache, rash, mood changes, low blood sugar (Cleveland Clinic, Phosphatidyl.) |
| Bacopa | Nausea, cramps, stool changes; mildly sedating (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri) |
| Carnitine, about 3 g a day | Nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, fishy odor (NIH ODS, Carnitine) |
Which side effects are serious?
Bleeding, seizures, severe stomach problems, allergic reactions and stroke-like symptoms are serious. FDA lists several of them as reasons to stop a product and report it (FDA, Report a Supplement Problem).
MSK describes ginkgo bleeding case reports and seizures in people who are predisposed or take drugs that lower the seizure threshold (MSK, Ginkgo). NIH says carnitine can cause seizures in people with seizure disorders (NIH ODS, Carnitine).
Unusual bleeding, a seizure, trouble breathing, a spreading rash, yellow skin or eyes, or stroke-like symptoms need urgent care. Call emergency services if severe.
Does the label list side effects?
A full label would. The MemoPryl images we have do not. They show a name, three claims and a capsule count, and nothing about warnings.

Stop the supplement and call your doctor or pharmacist. NCCIH advises stopping and contacting your provider if you have side effects (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).
Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed, and bring the bottle to the visit. You can also report the problem to FDA. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you begin any supplement.

FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
Can brain supplements cause headaches?
Yes. Headache is listed for ginkgo, St. John's wort and phosphatidylserine by the sources we cite. If headaches start after a new supplement, stop it and tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Can a memory supplement cause stomach upset?
Yes. Stomach upset, nausea or cramps are named for several ingredients, including ginkgo, St. John's wort, bacopa and carnitine. Take only as the bottle directs and call a clinician if it persists.
Do supplement side effects go away when I stop?
Often they ease, but not always. Stop the product, note what you took and when, and call your doctor. Do not assume a mild sign is harmless if it keeps getting worse.
