Brahmi vs Bacopa: Same Plant, Different Names
Brahmi vs bacopa is mostly a naming puzzle. Brahmi is the Ayurvedic name sold for Bacopa monnieri, the marsh herb. But LiverTox notes that brahmi is also used as a name for gotu kola, a different plant. The Latin name on the label settles which one you have.

Is brahmi the same as bacopa?
Often yes. The seller's product notes names "brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)", and bacopa is an herbal extract used in Ayurvedic medicine (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).
But the common name alone is not enough. LiverTox warns that Brahmi is also a name used for gotu kola, so the two can be confused (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).
In this post, "bacopa" always means Bacopa monnieri, the plant the trials studied.
How do I tell which plant a label means?
Read the Latin name, written as two words in italics or plain type. Bacopa monnieri is the one in the studies below.
The studies on memory and attention used standardized Bacopa monnieri extract for at least 12 weeks (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.). A label that says only "brahmi" gives you no way to match those studies.
| Label wording | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) | Names the studied plant |
| Bacopa monnieri extract | Names the plant and the form |
| Brahmi only | Could mean more than one plant (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri) |
| Amount in mg | Compare with 300 to 600 mg of extract used in trials (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri) |
What does MemoPryl say about brahmi?
The bottle images name no plants at all. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is named on a sibling MemoPryl pack, and that is unconfirmed for your bottle.
No Supplement Facts panel was supplied, so there is no Latin name to read and no amount to compare. Trust the bottle you receive over any page.

See packsWhat should I check before buying?
Check the Latin name, the amount and the warnings, then ask your doctor or pharmacist. Keep taking your prescribed medicine as directed.
Bacopa can interact with some drugs, including cholinergic and anticholinergic medicines and thyroid medicine (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri). Follow these steps before the first capsule.

Read the bottle you receive
Look at the safety seal, the capsule count (30 or 60), the directions and the Supplement Facts panel. None of our images shows a panel, so the bottle is the source.
- 02
Check your medicines first
St. John's wort makes many medicines weaker, and ginkgo can raise bleeding risk. Before the first capsule, show the bottle to your pharmacist.
- 03
Take it as the bottle directs
None of our images prints a dose. Go by your bottle and never take a dose from a website, including this one.

Write a date and a note
Jot down what you notice and when. See a doctor if memory or thinking worries you; a supplement is no way to wait.

FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
Is gotu kola the same as bacopa?
No. They are different plants, though LiverTox says the name Brahmi is also used for gotu kola. Our bacopa evidence, including the 12-week trials, is about Bacopa monnieri only. Do not assume results carry over.
Why do supplement labels use brahmi instead of bacopa?
Our sources do not say why. Brahmi is the Ayurvedic name for the herb in common use. A label that lists the Latin name too is easier to check against studies.
Where does bacopa come from?
LiverTox describes bacopa as an herbal extract used in Ayurvedic medicine, and the seller's notes calls it a marsh herb. We found no source for where any MemoPryl ingredient is grown, and no factory is named.
