Bacopa vs Ginkgo: Evidence, Risks and Differences
Bacopa vs ginkgo: bacopa has small trials suggesting better attention speed, while ginkgo's large trial found no lower dementia rate. Ginkgo carries a bleeding risk with blood thinners; bacopa's issues are mostly stomach upset. Both are named on a sibling MemoPryl pack, with no amounts printed.

Which has better evidence, bacopa or ginkgo?
Neither has strong proof, but they differ. Bacopa has a meta-analysis suggesting better attention speed; ginkgo has a large trial that found no benefit for dementia rates.
The bacopa analysis pooled nine studies of at least 12 weeks and said it may improve cognition, but called for larger trials (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.). The ginkgo GEM trial followed 3,069 adults aged 75 or older for a median of 6.1 years and found no effective reduction in dementia or Alzheimer disease (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA).
NCCIH calls ginkgo's benefit for healthy people uncertain (NCCIH, Ginkgo). LiverTox says bacopa is not shown effective for any disease in adequate trials (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).
How much of each did studies use?
Ginkgo extract was tested at 120 mg twice a day, and bacopa extract at 300 to 600 mg a day for at least 12 weeks (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA) (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).
The bars show those ranges. The amount in MemoPryl is not printed on any image we have, so no one can say how a capsule compares.
Which is riskier with medicines?
Ginkgo, mainly because of bleeding. NCCIH says it may raise bleeding risk with anticoagulants such as warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo).
FDA says ginkgo, warfarin, aspirin and vitamin E can each thin the blood, and taking them together may raise the risk of internal bleeding or stroke (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements). MSK also notes seizure reports (MSK, Ginkgo).
| Point | Bacopa | Ginkgo |
|---|---|---|

| Studied amount | 300 to 600 mg extract (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri) | 120 mg twice a day (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA) |
| Common effects | Nausea, cramps, loose stools (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri) | Dizziness, stomach upset, headache (NCCIH, Ginkgo) |
| Main medicine risk | Cholinergic and thyroid drugs (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri) | Blood thinners (NCCIH, Ginkgo) |

See packsHow should I choose between them?
Do not choose on the herb's name. Ask your doctor or pharmacist, and keep taking your prescribed medicine as directed.
Both are named on a sibling MemoPryl pack, unconfirmed for your bottle. People are often asked to stop supplements two to three weeks before a procedure (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements). Tell your surgical team about both.

FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
Can I take bacopa and ginkgo together?
Our sources do not test the pair. Each has its own cautions, and ginkgo adds bleeding risk. Ask your pharmacist to check both against your medicines before combining them in one product.
Which is gentler on the stomach, bacopa or ginkgo?
Our sources do not rank them. Bacopa's usual effects are nausea, cramps and loose stools, and ginkgo's include stomach upset, dizziness and headache. Either can upset some people.
Does the GEM trial apply to younger adults?
The GEM trial enrolled adults aged 75 or older, so its dementia result may not apply to younger people. It also tested one extract and one amount, not MemoPryl.
