Bacopa Monnieri Benefits: What 12-Week Trials Report

What are the benefits of Bacopa monnieri?

The best-supported finding is better attention speed after at least 12 weeks of a standardized extract.

A meta-analysis pooled randomized, placebo-controlled trials of 12 weeks or more. Nine studies with 518 participants met the rules, and 437 were included in the analysis. The authors said bacopa may improve cognition, mainly attention speed, and that a large head-to-head trial is still needed (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.).

"May" is the key word. This is a hint worth following up, not proof.

Does bacopa improve memory?

Only in a narrow way, and not in every study. StatPearls describes a review of six studies that found better free recall but no gain in other thinking areas (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri).

It also notes a trial of 30 healthy adults given 450 mg a day for 12 weeks that showed no significant change in cognitive scores (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri). NIH's LiverTox entry says bacopa is not shown effective for any disease in adequately controlled human trials, and it is not approved in the United States for any condition (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).

How long does bacopa take to show an effect in trials?

The trials in the meta-analysis ran at least 12 weeks. That is the shortest period they counted, so shorter use tells us little. Even then, effects were mainly on attention speed, and the authors called for larger trials.

Is bacopa approved for memory by the FDA?

No. LiverTox says it is not approved in the United States as therapy for any medical condition, and StatPearls says FDA has not approved it for any medical purpose. It is sold as a supplement, not a drug.

Are bacopa trial results enough to trust a label claim?

Not by themselves. The trials tested standardized extracts, and a bottle may differ. No trial has tested MemoPryl. Without printed amounts, you cannot match your capsule to any study.
