Are Memory Supplements Safe for Older Adults?
Are memory supplements safe for older adults? Some are tolerated, but safety depends on the ingredient and the person's medicines, and the evidence for benefit is weak. NCCIH calls evidence for most memory supplements inconclusive. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first, and see a doctor about memory worries.

Are memory supplements safe for older adults to take?
Safety depends on the ingredient and on what else the person takes. There is no blanket answer, and "natural" does not always mean "safe" (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).
NCCIH lists ginkgo side effects as headache, nausea, stomach upset, dizziness and allergic skin reactions, and notes some data suggest a higher bleeding risk (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition). Older adults often take prescription medicines, so interactions deserve a pharmacist's eye.
FDA says supplements are not approved for safety and effectiveness before sale (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements). Whoever buys the product has to do the checking.
Do memory supplements work in older adults?
The evidence is weak. NCCIH says evidence for ginkgo, omega-3, vitamin E and B vitamins is inconclusive, limited or inconsistent (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition).
A large placebo-controlled trial of more than 3,000 older adults found ginkgo did not lower the overall incidence of dementia or Alzheimer's disease (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition). A National Academies summary found encouraging but inconclusive evidence for activity, blood pressure management and cognitive training, and insufficient evidence for most supplements (National Academies 2017 report).
| Approach | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Most memory supplements | Inconclusive, limited or inconsistent, in NCCIH's words (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition) |
| Physical activity | Encouraging although inconclusive (National Academies 2017 report) |
| Blood pressure management | Encouraging although inconclusive (National Academies 2017 report) |
| Cognitive training | Encouraging although inconclusive (National Academies 2017 report) |
When is forgetfulness a reason to see a doctor?
Any worry about memory is a reason to talk with a doctor. NIA says forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging, but dementia is not (NIA, Forgetfulness: When to Ask).
A supplement should never be a way to wait. If you notice the signs below, book a visit.
DoctorBook a visit if you notice any of these. Waiting on a supplement is not the answer, and only a clinician can say what a memory change means.
- 01Losing things often
- 02Forgetting important events or appointments
- 03Trouble remembering recent events
- 04Trouble thinking clearly
- 05Getting lost somewhere you know well
- 06Family or friends see a change that you do not
- 07A new memory change after you start any medicine or supplement
Warning signs adapted from NIA (NIA, Forgetfulness: When to Ask) and the Alzheimer's Association (Alz. Assoc., Mild Cognitive Imp.). Treat it as a prompt to talk to a doctor, not as a screening test.

FAQ01
Questions people ask about MemoPryl
Can older adults take ginkgo safely?
Ask first. NCCIH lists headache, nausea, dizziness and allergic skin reactions, and some data suggest more bleeding risk, so people on blood thinners need a pharmacist's check before using it.
Is memory loss a normal part of aging?
Some forgetfulness is normal, but NIA says dementia is not. Trouble remembering recent events or thinking clearly is a reason to talk with a doctor, not to try a supplement.
Who can check my memory supplement with my medicines?
A pharmacist or your doctor. Bring the bottle, the panel if one is printed, and a list of every medicine. They can flag interactions before the first capsule.
